What we can and cannot do

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a confirmed slot. We cannot tell you whether you need an MRI. If you have new weakness, numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden severe headache, chest pain or any symptom that frightens you, call 999 or NHS 111, or see your GP, today.

What we can do: explain the price, the referral rule and the centre types in plain English, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent scanning centre that covers your area so it can contact you. That is free for you. The centre may pay us a fee.

Four steps to a private MRI

  1. Body area. Name the one area to be scanned: ankle. Two areas usually cost more than one.
  2. Referral rule. Check whether the centre takes self-referral or wants a letter from a GP, physio or consultant. See self-referral and GP letter.
  3. Centre type. Dedicated scanning centre, hospital group, or open MRI. Compare the from-price, the referral rule and the report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you. Use the form. One partner centre may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price with them.

What does an ankle MRI show?

An ankle MRI shows the ligaments that hold the ankle together, the Achilles tendon and the other tendons that run around the ankle, the joint cartilage, and the bones, including small bones that can crack without showing on an X-ray. It is the usual scan for a sprain that has not recovered, a suspected tendon tear, ongoing pain after an injury, or a possible stress fracture in a runner.

Ultrasound is also used for the Achilles and some other tendons. MRI shows the cartilage, deep ligaments and bone marrow better.

Can I refer myself for a private ankle MRI?

Some dedicated centres accept self-referral. Vista Health covers the foot and ankle together and says scans start from £249; its self-referral route is for adults and starts with a safety and clinical questionnaire. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. A physio or podiatrist who has examined you is often the quickest route. See self-referral.

How much does a private ankle MRI cost?

On 5 October 2026, Vista Health listed £249 off-peak, £360 standard and £380 fast track for a single area. Hospital guide prices for one part ranged from £400 to £620 at the Nuffield Health sites we checked, and Fortius Clinic Wimbledon listed £735 before consultant fees. If the problem is in the foot as well as the ankle, ask whether that is one area or two. See the foot MRI page.

What happens during an ankle MRI?

You lie on your back, feet first, with the ankle in a coil. Your head usually stays outside or near the opening, so ankle scans suit many people who find enclosed spaces hard. The scan usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Keep the foot still; foam pads help.

When is an ankle MRI worth it?

Most ankle sprains recover with time and rehabilitation. A scan helps most when recovery has stalled, the ankle keeps giving way, there is pain at a specific point on the bone, or a surgeon is planning treatment. A good centre will tell you if a scan is unlikely to change what you do.

What should I check before booking?

  • Ankle only, or ankle and foot, and how is that priced?
  • Self-referral, or a letter needed?
  • Report time and image download.
  • Who will explain the report to you?

Can I get a private ankle MRI without a GP?

Yes, at some dedicated centres that accept self-referral. Hospital groups usually want a referral from a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or podiatrist.
