What we can and cannot do in Manchester

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Manchester prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Manchester, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private ankle MRI in Manchester

  1. Body area: ankle, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Manchester centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Manchester?

Greater Manchester has dedicated scanning centres across several boroughs, private hospitals in and around the city, and a hospital-group diagnostic suite with published guide prices. Because Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs, a "Manchester" scan might be in Salford, Denton, Rochdale or Cheadle, so check the postcode before you book.

Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite, in the M13 postcode south of the city centre, published one of the lowest hospital-group guide prices we found: £400 for one part, £538 for two and £658 for three, on 5 October 2026. It needs a referral. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Manchester Hospital, and Circle Health Group lists The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle and The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale. Those did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Manchester area: Salford, Denton (south-east Manchester), Rochdale. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a ankle scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £400; £538 two parts; £658 three parts and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Manchester without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Manchester. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.

Ankle scans are feet first and usually quick. In Greater Manchester, a Metrolink stop or on-site parking near the scanning site matters if you are on crutches. Salford Quays and Denton sites may be easier to reach than the city centre for many people.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Manchester?

Manchester's main NHS hospitals include Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe Hospital, run by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Salford Royal, run by the Northern Care Alliance. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure. Waits vary by trust; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each one.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Manchester?

The Metrolink tram network reaches Salford Quays, the city centre and many outer boroughs, which helps if a centre is near a stop. Several dedicated sites are close to the M60 ring road, which makes them easy to reach by car from most of Greater Manchester. City-centre and hospital sites often have paid parking. If you live north of the city, Rochdale may be closer than central Manchester; if you live south or east, Denton or Cheadle may be easier.

What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?

Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.

Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Manchester before an ankle MRI?

Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Manchester can refer you, and then read the report with you.

Do runners in Manchester need an MRI for a stress fracture?

If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Manchester centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.

What is the cheapest hospital MRI price in Manchester?

On 5 October 2026, Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite listed £400 for one part, with a referral needed. Dedicated centres charging national prices started from £249.

Is a Manchester MRI centre always in Manchester itself?

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Manchester without a GP?

Yes, at dedicated centres that cover foot and ankle by self-referral. A podiatrist's or physio's letter is often accepted at hospital sites near Manchester.

Will an MRI show an ankle stress fracture?

MRI often shows early stress fractures that an X-ray misses. Stop running on it until you have been assessed.
