What we can and cannot do

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a confirmed slot. We cannot tell you whether you need an MRI. If you have new weakness, numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden severe headache, chest pain or any symptom that frightens you, call 999 or NHS 111, or see your GP, today.

What we can do: explain the price, the referral rule and the centre types in plain English, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent scanning centre that covers your area so it can contact you. That is free for you. The centre may pay us a fee.

Four steps to a private MRI

  1. Body area. Name the one area to be scanned: the body area. Two areas usually cost more than one.
  2. Referral rule. Check whether the centre takes self-referral or wants a letter from a GP, physio or consultant. See self-referral and GP letter.
  3. Centre type. Dedicated scanning centre, hospital group, or open MRI. Compare the from-price, the referral rule and the report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you. Use the form. One partner centre may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price with them.

How much does a private MRI cost in England?

A private MRI is priced per body area. One area, such as a knee or the lower back, is the unit most centres quote. The cheapest published price we found on 5 October 2026 was £249 for an off-peak single-area scan at Vista Health, a dedicated scanning centre group. Its standard price was £360 and its fast-track price, for a scan within seven days, was £380. If the scan needs contrast dye, Vista adds £125.

Hospital groups usually cost more. Nuffield Health publishes guide prices per hospital: £400 at its Manchester Diagnostic Suite and up to £620 at its Cambridge hospital for one part, on the date we checked. Circle Health Group says its MRI prices start from £347 across its hospitals but that the quote may be higher. Specialist orthopaedic clinics in London publish higher figures again, such as £950 for one part at Fortius Clinic's central London sites, before consultant fees.

The price you are quoted depends on five things: the number of areas, whether you need contrast, how soon you want the scan, the type of centre, and whether a consultant's fee is added on top. We explain each on the private MRI cost page.

Can I get a private MRI without a GP referral?

Sometimes. Some dedicated scanning centres accept self-referral: you fill in a clinical questionnaire and a radiographer or doctor at the centre checks that the scan is safe and suitable. Vista Health says it accepts self-referral from adults for many single-area scans. Online booking services such as Scan.com do not need a GP letter either; their own clinicians write the referral after a short consultation.

Most hospital groups ask for a referral from a registered healthcare professional. Nuffield Health's MRI pages, for example, say you need a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. Without a referral, a centre can still turn you down if it thinks the scan will not answer your question. Read self-referral and GP letter before you choose.

How soon can I have a private MRI?

Speed depends on the centre and the slot type. Off-peak slots are cheaper because they are at fixed, less popular times. Fast-track slots cost more but promise a scan within a set number of days. Hospital groups often have short waits too, but you may need a consultant appointment first.

For comparison, NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. The figure is for England as a whole. Your local NHS trust may be faster or slower.

Which type of MRI centre should I choose?

There are three common types in England.

  • Dedicated scanning centres. Scanning is all they do. They tend to be the cheapest and the most likely to take self-referral. Some are mobile units parked at a hospital or a community site.
  • Hospital groups. Private hospitals with an MRI department. Prices are higher, a referral is usually needed, and a consultant can see you on the same site if the scan shows a problem.
  • Open or upright MRI. Scanners with wider openings or that scan you sitting or standing. Useful if you are claustrophobic or larger. Fewer places offer them and they cost more. See open MRI.

What does a private MRI report include, and how long does it take?

A consultant radiologist reads your images and writes a report. Dedicated centres often send the report to you and your referrer; Vista Health says its report comes within three working days. Nuffield Health's hospital pages say results go to your referring professional, usually within a week. The report describes what the images show. It is not a treatment plan. You still need a GP, physio or consultant to explain what it means for you. See report times.

Is a private MRI worth it if I am already on an NHS list?

That is your decision, and it depends on why you need the scan. A private scan does not usually move you up an NHS waiting list for treatment. If your NHS clinician has already ordered an MRI, ask them how long the wait is likely to be and whether they would accept a private report. Some do, some want their own imaging. If you have insurance, ask your insurer before you book; see insured or self-pay.

How does this site make money?

It is free for you. If you ask us to, we pass your request to one independent scanning centre that covers your area. That centre may pay us a fee for the introduction. We do not take payment from you, we do not book the scan and we do not hold a slot. The full explanation is on how we make money.
