- No centre we checked publishes a separate whole spine MRI price, so these are general one-area guide prices. Ask the centre whether a whole spine scan counts as one area and whether it needs contrast.
Prices are the centres' own published figures, checked by Pete on 5 October 2026. A centre may change a price at any time; the centre's quote is what counts. We delete a row we cannot re-check. Listing a centre here does not mean it is a partner of ours. Full list on Sources.
What we can and cannot do
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a confirmed slot. We cannot tell you whether you need an MRI. If you have new weakness, numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden severe headache, chest pain or any symptom that frightens you, call 999 or NHS 111, or see your GP, today.
What we can do: explain the price, the referral rule and the centre types in plain English, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent scanning centre that covers your area so it can contact you. That is free for you. The centre may pay us a fee.
Four steps to a private MRI
- Body area. Name the one area to be scanned: whole spine. Two areas usually cost more than one.
- Referral rule. Check whether the centre takes self-referral or wants a letter from a GP, physio or consultant. See self-referral and GP letter.
- Centre type. Dedicated scanning centre, hospital group, or open MRI. Compare the from-price, the referral rule and the report time.
- Ask one centre to contact you. Use the form. One partner centre may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price with them.
What does a whole spine MRI show?
A whole spine MRI images the neck (cervical), mid back (thoracic) and lower back (lumbar) in one appointment. It is used when a problem may affect more than one level, for example a condition that affects the spinal cord along its length, pain at several levels, or when a specialist wants a complete picture before treatment. It is also part of some full-body MRI packages.
For most people with back or neck pain in one place, scanning the whole spine adds time and cost without adding useful information. Ask the person advising you whether one region would answer the question.
How much does a private whole spine MRI cost?
Most centres price the spine by region: neck, mid back and lower back. A whole spine is therefore often charged as two or three areas, not one. On 5 October 2026, Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite listed £538 for two parts and £658 for three parts. Vista Health's full-body packages showed that its £1,345 package includes the whole spine with brain, abdomen and pelvis; we did not find a standalone whole spine price on its pages. Get a written quote that says how many regions are included.
Can I refer myself for a private whole spine MRI?
Some dedicated centres accept self-referral for spine scans after a clinical questionnaire. Because a whole spine scan is a bigger and more expensive request, many centres will want a clear reason, and some will only do it on a referral from a GP or consultant. Hospital groups usually want a referral. See self-referral.
What happens during a whole spine MRI?
You lie on your back, head first, and the table moves you through the scanner in stages. It takes longer than a single region: often 45 minutes to an hour or more. Lying still for that long is hard with back pain; take your usual pain relief and ask for a knee cushion. If you are anxious in enclosed spaces, tell the centre, because your head will be inside the scanner for the neck part.
When should I not wait for a private scan?
Get urgent help through NHS 111, your GP or A&E for new weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, problems walking, numbness around the genitals or back passage, or new bladder or bowel problems.
What should I ask before booking?
- How many regions are included, and what does each cost?
- Self-referral, or a referral needed?
- How long will I be in the scanner?
- Report time, and who explains the findings across all levels?
