What we can and cannot do in Leicester

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Leicester prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Leicester, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private ankle MRI in Leicester

  1. Body area: ankle, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Leicester centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Leicester?

Leicester has a private hospital on the east side of the city and further options across Leicestershire and the wider East Midlands. On 5 October 2026 we did not find a dedicated scanning centre with published prices inside the city itself, so some people travel to Nottingham, Coventry or Milton Keynes, or use a hospital group locally.

Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital, in the LE5 postcode east of the city, published a one-part guide price of £470 on 5 October 2026, one of the lower hospital-group prices we found, with a referral needed and results sent to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Leicester Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £470 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Leicester without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Leicester. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.

For an ankle in Leicester, a local scan saves a long drive on a painful ankle. If you were thinking of travelling to Nottingham or Coventry to save money, add fuel, parking and time to the comparison.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Leicester?

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust runs the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; the trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Leicester?

Leicester's ring roads make east and west sites easy to reach by car from the M1 and the A46. City-centre parking is mostly paid. If you are thinking of travelling to a dedicated centre in another city to save money, add the fuel, parking and time to the comparison, and check the referral rule first so you do not make a wasted journey.

If you live in Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough or Melton, compare the drive into Leicester with the trip to Nottingham or Coventry. The outer ring road can be slow at peak times. Ask the hospital about parking if you have a painful joint or back.

Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Leicester before an ankle MRI?

Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Leicester can refer you, and then read the report with you.

Do runners in Leicester need an MRI for a stress fracture?

If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Leicester centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.

What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?

Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.
