What we can and cannot do in Oxford
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Oxford prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Oxford, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Oxford?
Oxford's private scanning options are concentrated in Headington, on the east side of the city, where several NHS hospitals also sit. On 5 October 2026 we did not find a dedicated scanning centre with published prices in Oxford itself; the nearest dedicated sites on Vista Health's list were in Swindon and Milton Keynes.
Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital, on Beech Road in Headington (OX3), published a one-part guide price of £590 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list did not include an Oxford hospital on 5 October 2026.
Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital, Oxford publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £590 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private ankle MRI in Oxford without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Oxford. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.
For an ankle in Oxford, Headington parking is limited, which matters on crutches. Park and Ride buses go to Headington, but check the walk at each end.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Oxford?
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all in Headington. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; the trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Oxford?
Headington is up the hill east of the city centre. Traffic on the ring road and into Headington can be slow at peak times, and hospital parking is limited and paid. Park and Ride sites around the city, and buses to Headington, are often quicker. Oxford has a zero emission zone in the city centre, which Headington sites are outside, but check the current rules if you drive through the centre.
Oxford's centre restricts cars, so most people drive to a Park and Ride site or use the buses. If you live in Banbury, Bicester, Abingdon or Witney, compare the trip to Headington with the trip to Swindon or Milton Keynes, and remember that a cheaper scan further away still costs you time and fuel.
Do runners in Oxford need an MRI for a stress fracture?
If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Oxford centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.
What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?
Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.
Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Oxford before an ankle MRI?
Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Oxford can refer you, and then read the report with you.
