What we can and cannot do in Cambridge

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Cambridge prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Cambridge, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private ankle MRI in Cambridge

  1. Body area: ankle, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Cambridge centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Cambridge?

Cambridge has a private hospital south of the city centre, a dedicated scanning site to the west, and further options across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. Vista Health also listed Peterborough and Bury St Edmunds on 5 October 2026, which may suit people further out.

Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, in the CB2 postcode, published the highest one-part guide price of the Nuffield sites we checked: £620 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Vista Health's Cambridge site, in the CB23 postcode west of the city, charges its national prices. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Cambridge area: Cambridge. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a ankle scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £620 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Cambridge without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Cambridge. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.

For an ankle, the CB23 site west of Cambridge is usually easier by car than central sites, which matters on crutches given how little parking the centre has.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Cambridge?

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Addenbrooke's Hospital, and Royal Papworth Hospital, the specialist heart and lung hospital, is on the same Cambridge Biomedical Campus. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Cambridge?

Cambridge city centre has very limited parking. The Park and Ride sites and the guided busway help for central and southern sites. A site to the west of the city, in the CB23 area, is usually easier by car from the A428 and the villages to the west than a central site. If you live in Ely, Newmarket or Royston, compare travel times rather than assuming Cambridge is closest.

Cambridge's centre has little parking and busy roads at peak times, so a site on the edge of the city is often easier by car. If you live in Ely, Huntingdon, Newmarket or Royston, compare the drive to each option, and ask whether you can be seen at a quieter time of day.

Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Cambridge before an ankle MRI?

Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Cambridge can refer you, and then read the report with you.

Do runners in Cambridge need an MRI for a stress fracture?

If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Cambridge centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.

What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?

Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Cambridge without a GP?
