What we can and cannot do in Bristol
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Bristol prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Bristol, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Bristol?
Bristol has a private hospital in Clifton, a dedicated diagnostic centre to the north of the city, and further options across the West of England. Vista Health also listed a community diagnostic centre in Weston-super-Mare on 5 October 2026, which may suit people south-west of the city.
Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, at Clifton Hill (BS8), published a one-part guide price of £525 on 5 October 2026, and said it can only give a guide price until your referral has been reviewed. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Bristol Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health's North Bristol Diagnostic Centre, in the BS34 postcode near Filton and Stoke Gifford, charges its national prices.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Bristol area: North Bristol Diagnostic Centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a ankle scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £525 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private ankle MRI in Bristol without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Bristol. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.
For an ankle in Bristol, the north Bristol site has easier car access than Clifton for many people on crutches. Ankle scans are feet first and short.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Bristol?
Bristol's main NHS hospitals include Southmead Hospital, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, run by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each trust's own figure.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Bristol?
Bristol has a Clean Air Zone in the city centre that charges older, more polluting vehicles, including some private cars. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it, but Clifton and city-centre sites are close to it, so check your vehicle before you drive. North Bristol sites are near the M4/M5 junction, which suits people coming from South Gloucestershire. Clifton parking is limited; buses and taxis may be easier.
Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Bristol before an ankle MRI?
Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Bristol can refer you, and then read the report with you.
Do runners in Bristol need an MRI for a stress fracture?
If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Bristol centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.
What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?
Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.

How much is a private MRI at a Bristol hospital?
On 5 October 2026, Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital listed a one-part guide price of £525, confirmed after your referral is reviewed.
Does Bristol's Clean Air Zone affect getting to a scan?
It can if you drive an older, non-compliant vehicle into the centre. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside the zone. Check before you drive.
Can I book a private ankle MRI in Bristol without a GP?
Yes, at dedicated centres that cover foot and ankle by self-referral. A podiatrist's or physio's letter is often accepted at hospital sites near Bristol.
Will an MRI show an ankle stress fracture?
MRI often shows early stress fractures that an X-ray misses. Stop running on it until you have been assessed.
