What we can and cannot do in Southampton

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a ankle MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Southampton prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Southampton, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private ankle MRI in Southampton

  1. Body area: ankle, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Southampton centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private ankle MRI in Southampton?

Southampton's private scanning options are mostly just north of the city, around Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh, near the M3. There are further options towards Portsmouth and Winchester.

Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, on Winchester Road in Chandler's Ford (SO53), published a one-part guide price of £565 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Vista Health's location list included an Eastleigh site, also in the SO53 postcode, charging its national prices. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Southampton Hospital and Spire Portsmouth Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Southampton area: Eastleigh. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a ankle scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, Chandler's Ford publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £565 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private ankle MRI in Southampton without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health covers foot and ankle together and offers adult self-referral after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Southampton. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant, registered physiotherapist or podiatrist. After a recent injury with pain on the bone, go to a minor injuries unit or A&E first, where an X-ray can be done the same day. See self-referral.

For an ankle, the Chandler's Ford sites are easier to park at than central Southampton, which helps on crutches. Eastleigh station is close by if you cannot drive.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Southampton?

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust runs Southampton General Hospital, which is also a major regional centre for specialist services. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; the trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Southampton?

Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh are a short drive from Southampton city centre via the M3 or the A335, and are easier to park at than many city-centre or hospital sites. Eastleigh has a mainline station with trains from Southampton. If you live in the Waterside, the New Forest or towards Portsmouth, compare travel times before choosing on price.

If you live in the New Forest or on the Waterside, the drive round to Chandler's Ford can take longer than the distance suggests, especially at peak times on the M27. People on the Isle of Wight need to add the ferry crossing to the trip, so an early or late slot may not work; ask the centre before you book.

Do runners in Southampton need an MRI for a stress fracture?

If a physio or GP suspects a stress fracture in the ankle or lower leg, MRI is often the test that shows it, because early stress fractures rarely show on an X-ray. Stop running on it until you have been assessed. Tell the Southampton centre where the pain is and how long you have had it, so the scan covers the right bones. If you run in a club, a sports physio may be able to refer you and follow up the report.

What if my ankle keeps giving way after a sprain?

Repeated giving way months after a sprain can mean the ligaments have healed loose, or there is damage to the joint surface. Most people improve with balance and strength rehabilitation, so many physios try that first. If it has not worked, an MRI can show the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and help a foot and ankle surgeon decide whether surgery would help. Take the report to the person who examined you.

Should I see a physio or podiatrist in Southampton before an ankle MRI?

Often, yes. Most ankle sprains recover with rehabilitation, and a physio or podiatrist can tell you whether yours is behaving like one that needs a scan: an ankle that keeps giving way, pain in one bony spot, or recovery that has stalled. Many in and around Southampton can refer you, and then read the report with you.
