What we can and cannot do in Southampton

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Southampton prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Southampton, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private prostate MRI in Southampton

  1. Body area: prostate, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Southampton centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Southampton?

Southampton's private scanning options are mostly just north of the city, around Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh, near the M3. There are further options towards Portsmouth and Winchester.

Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, on Winchester Road in Chandler's Ford (SO53), published a one-part guide price of £565 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Vista Health's location list included an Eastleigh site, also in the SO53 postcode, charging its national prices. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Southampton Hospital and Spire Portsmouth Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Southampton area: Eastleigh. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a prostate scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, Chandler's Ford publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £565 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private prostate MRI in Southampton without a GP?

Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Southampton. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.

For a prostate scan near Southampton, ask the Eastleigh site whether it does prostate MRI and which protocol. Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 on 5 October 2026. Spire Southampton did not publish a prostate MRI price we could verify, so ask it for a written quote.

Southampton General Hospital provides cancer services for much of the region. Urgent suspected cancer routes run through local urology services; if your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long that route is taking first.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Southampton?

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust runs Southampton General Hospital, which is also a major regional centre for specialist services. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; the trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Southampton?

Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh are a short drive from Southampton city centre via the M3 or the A335, and are easier to park at than many city-centre or hospital sites. Eastleigh has a mainline station with trains from Southampton. If you live in the Waterside, the New Forest or towards Portsmouth, compare travel times before choosing on price.

If you live in the New Forest or on the Waterside, the drive round to Chandler's Ford can take longer than the distance suggests, especially at peak times on the M27. People on the Isle of Wight need to add the ferry crossing to the trip, so an early or late slot may not work; ask the centre before you book.

What should I do before a prostate MRI in Southampton?

Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.

What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?

Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.

Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Southampton?

Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.
