What we can and cannot do in Oxford
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Oxford prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Oxford, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Oxford?
Oxford's private scanning options are concentrated in Headington, on the east side of the city, where several NHS hospitals also sit. On 5 October 2026 we did not find a dedicated scanning centre with published prices in Oxford itself; the nearest dedicated sites on Vista Health's list were in Swindon and Milton Keynes.
Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital, on Beech Road in Headington (OX3), published a one-part guide price of £590 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list did not include an Oxford hospital on 5 October 2026.

Can I book a private prostate MRI in Oxford without a GP?
Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Oxford. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.
For a prostate scan in Oxford, we found no self-referral prostate MRI site in the city at a published price. Vista Health lists sites in Swindon and Milton Keynes; its prostate page listed £395 and £650 on 5 October 2026. Ask whether the site you pick runs prostate MRI.
The Churchill Hospital is the base for Oxford's NHS cancer services. Urgent suspected cancer routes run through local urology services; if your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long that route is taking first.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Oxford?
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all in Headington. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; the trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Oxford?
Headington is up the hill east of the city centre. Traffic on the ring road and into Headington can be slow at peak times, and hospital parking is limited and paid. Park and Ride sites around the city, and buses to Headington, are often quicker. Oxford has a zero emission zone in the city centre, which Headington sites are outside, but check the current rules if you drive through the centre.
Oxford's centre restricts cars, so most people drive to a Park and Ride site or use the buses. If you live in Banbury, Bicester, Abingdon or Witney, compare the trip to Headington with the trip to Swindon or Milton Keynes, and remember that a cheaper scan further away still costs you time and fuel.
What should I do before a prostate MRI in Oxford?
Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.
What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?
Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.
Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Oxford?
Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.
