What we can and cannot do in Newcastle

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Newcastle prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Newcastle, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private prostate MRI in Newcastle

  1. Body area: prostate, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Newcastle centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Newcastle?

Newcastle and Tyneside have a private hospital in Jesmond, dedicated scanning sites in Gateshead and North Tyneside, and further options across the North East. Many people here cross the Tyne for a scan, so search by postcode and travel time, not by city name.

Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital, in the NE2 postcode, published a one-part guide price of £590 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results sent to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Washington Hospital, south-east of Gateshead; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health listed sites in Gateshead (NE11) and North Tyneside (NE29), plus Hexham and Wansbeck further out.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Newcastle area: Gateshead, North Tyneside, Hexham, Wansbeck. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a prostate scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £590 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private prostate MRI in Newcastle without a GP?

Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Newcastle. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.

For a prostate scan on Tyneside, ask the Gateshead and North Tyneside sites which of them runs prostate MRI. Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 on 5 October 2026. If you live in Northumberland, ask whether Hexham or Wansbeck offer it, to save a trip into the city.

The Northern Centre for Cancer Care is based at the Freeman Hospital. Urgent suspected cancer routes run through local urology services; if your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long that route is taking first.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Newcastle?

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Newcastle?

The Tyne and Wear Metro links Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Sunderland, which helps if a site is near a station. Newcastle and Gateshead's Clean Air Zone charges some commercial vehicles but not private cars. The Gateshead site's NE11 postcode covers the Team Valley area, which is easiest by car from the A1. North Tyneside suits people near the coast.

If you live in Sunderland or County Durham, a Gateshead site south of the river may be quicker than going into Newcastle. People in rural Northumberland face long journeys either way, so ask about early or late appointments and plan how you will get home if you are given a sedative for claustrophobia.

What should I do before a prostate MRI in Newcastle?

Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.

What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?

Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.

Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Newcastle?

Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.
