What we can and cannot do in Liverpool
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Liverpool prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Liverpool, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.
Four steps to a private prostate MRI in Liverpool
- Body area: prostate, one side unless you say otherwise.
- Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Liverpool centre.
- Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
- Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.
Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Liverpool?
Liverpool has a dedicated scanning centre in the city centre, private hospitals in and around the city, and more options across Merseyside and the Wirral. Because the Mersey divides the region, people on the Wirral may find a site on their side of the river more practical than one in the city.
Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Liverpool Hospital and Spire Murrayfield Hospital on the Wirral; Spire did not publish an MRI price for them that we could verify on 5 October 2026. Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode, in the city centre, which charges its national prices.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Liverpool area: Liverpool city centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a prostate scan on the day you want.
Can I book a private prostate MRI in Liverpool without a GP?
Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Liverpool. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.
For a prostate scan in Liverpool, ask the city-centre site whether it does prostate MRI and which protocol. Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 on 5 October 2026. If you are on the Wirral, ask Spire Murrayfield for a written quote to compare, as it did not publish one.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has a hospital in Liverpool city centre as well as on the Wirral. Liverpool's urology services run urgent suspected cancer routes; if your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long that route is taking first.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Liverpool?
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital. The Walton Centre in Fazakerley is a specialist NHS neurology and neurosurgery trust. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Liverpool?
A city-centre scanning site is well served by Merseyrail and buses, which helps if you do not drive. City-centre parking is mostly in paid car parks. Crossing the Mersey by tunnel carries a toll, which is worth remembering if you live on the Wirral. If you live in north Liverpool or Sefton, check whether a site nearer Aintree is easier than the city centre.
What should I do before a prostate MRI in Liverpool?
Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.
What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?
Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.
Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Liverpool?
Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.

Is there a private MRI centre in Liverpool city centre?
Yes. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode.
Should I use a centre on the Wirral or in Liverpool?
Choose by travel. The Mersey tunnels carry a toll, so people on the Wirral may find a site on their side of the river easier.
Can I book a private prostate MRI in Liverpool without a GP?
Some dedicated centres accept adult self-referral for prostate scans. Many men in Liverpool start with a PSA test through their GP.
Can a prostate MRI rule out cancer?
No. It helps decide whether a biopsy is needed and where. Only a biopsy can confirm what an area is.
