What we can and cannot do in Bristol
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Bristol prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Bristol, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.
Four steps to a private prostate MRI in Bristol
- Body area: prostate, one side unless you say otherwise.
- Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Bristol centre.
- Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
- Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.
Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Bristol?
Bristol has a private hospital in Clifton, a dedicated diagnostic centre to the north of the city, and further options across the West of England. Vista Health also listed a community diagnostic centre in Weston-super-Mare on 5 October 2026, which may suit people south-west of the city.
Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, at Clifton Hill (BS8), published a one-part guide price of £525 on 5 October 2026, and said it can only give a guide price until your referral has been reviewed. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Bristol Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health's North Bristol Diagnostic Centre, in the BS34 postcode near Filton and Stoke Gifford, charges its national prices.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Bristol area: North Bristol Diagnostic Centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a prostate scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £525 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private prostate MRI in Bristol without a GP?
Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Bristol. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.
For a prostate scan in Bristol, ask the North Bristol Diagnostic Centre which protocol it runs. Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 on 5 October 2026. A Clifton one-part guide price may not cover a multiparametric scan, so ask for a quote for the exact scan.
The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, next to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, is the city's NHS cancer centre. Urgent suspected cancer routes run through local urology services; if your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long that route is taking first.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Bristol?
Bristol's main NHS hospitals include Southmead Hospital, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, run by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each trust's own figure.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Bristol?
Bristol has a Clean Air Zone in the city centre that charges older, more polluting vehicles, including some private cars. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it, but Clifton and city-centre sites are close to it, so check your vehicle before you drive. North Bristol sites are near the M4/M5 junction, which suits people coming from South Gloucestershire. Clifton parking is limited; buses and taxis may be easier.
Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Bristol?
Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.
What should I do before a prostate MRI in Bristol?
Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.
What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?
Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.

How much is a private MRI at a Bristol hospital?
On 5 October 2026, Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital listed a one-part guide price of £525, confirmed after your referral is reviewed.
Does Bristol's Clean Air Zone affect getting to a scan?
It can if you drive an older, non-compliant vehicle into the centre. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside the zone. Check before you drive.
Can I book a private prostate MRI in Bristol without a GP?
Some dedicated centres accept adult self-referral for prostate scans. Many men in Bristol start with a PSA test through their GP.
Can a prostate MRI rule out cancer?
No. It helps decide whether a biopsy is needed and where. Only a biopsy can confirm what an area is.
