What we can and cannot do in Birmingham

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a prostate MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Birmingham prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Birmingham, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private prostate MRI in Birmingham

  1. Body area: prostate, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Birmingham centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private prostate MRI in Birmingham?

Birmingham and the wider West Midlands have a mix of dedicated scanning centres, several private hospitals and NHS community diagnostic sites where independent providers run scanners. Several dedicated scanning sites sit outside the city centre, in places such as Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall, which can suit people who would rather not drive into the centre.

Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Little Aston Hospital, near Sutton Coldfield, and Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull. Circle Health Group lists The Priory Hospital in Edgbaston. None of those published a Birmingham MRI price we could verify on 5 October 2026, so they are not in the table. Birmingham is also one of the few places with an upright MRI scanner listed at a published price.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Birmingham area: Birmingham, South Birmingham Diagnostic Centre, North Solihull Diagnostic Centre, Sandwell, Walsall. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a prostate scan on the day you want.

Can I book a private prostate MRI in Birmingham without a GP?

Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral and an enquiry route for prostate MRI, at the same price at its sites near Birmingham. Many people start with a PSA blood test through their GP; if it is raised, the NHS has an urgent suspected cancer route. NICE guidance recommends multiparametric MRI as the first-line test for suspected localised prostate cancer before a biopsy. See self-referral.

For a prostate scan in Birmingham, ask which protocol a centre uses before comparing prices. Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 for a biparametric and £650 for a multiparametric scan on 5 October 2026, and its five West Midlands sites may not all do prostate imaging, so ask which one does.

Birmingham's NHS hospitals run urgent suspected cancer routes for prostate concerns, and the region's major cancer services are based at the Queen Elizabeth. If your GP has found a raised PSA, ask how long the local route is taking before deciding to pay.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Birmingham?

The main NHS hospitals in the city include the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands and Good Hope, run by University Hospitals Birmingham, and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield. Midland Metropolitan University Hospital serves Sandwell and west Birmingham. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Birmingham?

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the area inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, and older vehicles that do not meet its standards are charged. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it. The Midland Metro tram and local rail lines reach some sites; many others are easier by car, with on-site parking. Check whether a site is at a hospital, where parking can be tight and paid, or on a business park. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield residents may find a site on their side of the city more practical than one in the centre.

What should I do before a prostate MRI in Birmingham?

Follow the centre's own instructions. Some ask you to avoid ejaculation for a few days, to empty your bowel or use a small enema, or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder; some give an injection to reduce bowel movement. If you have had a biopsy recently, tell the centre, because many prefer to wait several weeks afterwards so bleeding does not affect the images. Tell them about any hip replacement, which can affect the images.

What if my PSA is raised but my GP has not referred me?

Ask your GP why. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, infection or recent exercise, and a GP may repeat the test. If you meet the criteria in NICE's suspected cancer guidance, your GP should refer you on an urgent route. A private MRI is an option if you want answers sooner, but you will still need a urologist to act on the result.

Should I have a bi-parametric or multi-parametric prostate MRI in Birmingham?

Ask the urologist or GP advising you. A bi-parametric scan uses no contrast and is cheaper. A multi-parametric scan adds images after contrast and takes longer. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's prostate page listed £395 and £650 respectively, but its general price list showed different figures the same day, so confirm the price with the centre.

Is there an upright MRI scanner in Birmingham?

Yes. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health listed upright MRI in Birmingham from £575 for one body part.

Do I have to drive into Birmingham city centre for a private MRI?

Often not. Several dedicated scanning sites are outside the centre, including in Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall.

Can I book a private prostate MRI in Birmingham without a GP?

Some dedicated centres accept adult self-referral for prostate scans. Many men in Birmingham start with a PSA test through their GP.

Can a prostate MRI rule out cancer?

No. It helps decide whether a biopsy is needed and where. Only a biopsy can confirm what an area is.
