What we can and cannot do in Newcastle

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a hip MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Newcastle prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Newcastle, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private hip MRI in Newcastle

  1. Body area: hip, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Newcastle centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private hip MRI in Newcastle?

Newcastle and Tyneside have a private hospital in Jesmond, dedicated scanning sites in Gateshead and North Tyneside, and further options across the North East. Many people here cross the Tyne for a scan, so search by postcode and travel time, not by city name.

Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital, in the NE2 postcode, published a one-part guide price of £590 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results sent to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Washington Hospital, south-east of Gateshead; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health listed sites in Gateshead (NE11) and North Tyneside (NE29), plus Hexham and Wansbeck further out.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Newcastle area: Gateshead, North Tyneside, Hexham, Wansbeck. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a hip scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £590 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Newcastle without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for hip scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Newcastle. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. For typical age-related hip arthritis, an X-ray is often the first test and NICE guidance says the condition can often be diagnosed without imaging, so ask whether an MRI is the right test. See self-referral.

For a hip, ask the Tyneside centre whether it will image one hip or the pelvis. If you live in Northumberland, Vista Health's Hexham and Wansbeck sites may be closer than Newcastle itself.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Newcastle?

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Newcastle?

The Tyne and Wear Metro links Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Sunderland, which helps if a site is near a station. Newcastle and Gateshead's Clean Air Zone charges some commercial vehicles but not private cars. The Gateshead site's NE11 postcode covers the Team Valley area, which is easiest by car from the A1. North Tyneside suits people near the coast.

If you live in Sunderland or County Durham, a Gateshead site south of the river may be quicker than going into Newcastle. People in rural Northumberland face long journeys either way, so ask about early or late appointments and plan how you will get home if you are given a sedative for claustrophobia.

Is groin pain a reason for a hip MRI in Newcastle?

Sometimes. Groin pain can come from the hip joint, the labrum, the tendons around the groin, a hernia or the lower back. A physio or GP examination narrows that down and decides whether an MRI of the hip, an ultrasound of the groin or a lower back scan is the right test. In younger, active people, an MRI or MR arthrogram is often used to look for a labral tear or impingement. Tell the Newcastle centre exactly where the pain is, so the scan covers the right area.

Can I have a hip MRI in Newcastle if I have a hip replacement?

A metal hip replacement distorts the images close to it, and the centre must check the implant first. Some centres use special sequences to reduce the distortion; others will suggest a different test. If you need the other hip or the lower back scanned, a replacement usually does not stop that. Bring the implant details, or the hospital and date of the operation, when you book.

Will a Newcastle centre scan one hip or both?

Ask. Some centres image the whole pelvis, which shows both hips, and price it as one area; others scan one hip at a time. If your pain is in the groin, the buttock or the outside of the hip, say so when you book so the radiographer covers the right area. A metal hip replacement affects both the safety check and the images; tell the centre about it first.
