What we can and cannot do in Manchester
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a hip MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Manchester prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Manchester, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private hip MRI in Manchester?
Greater Manchester has dedicated scanning centres across several boroughs, private hospitals in and around the city, and a hospital-group diagnostic suite with published guide prices. Because Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs, a "Manchester" scan might be in Salford, Denton, Rochdale or Cheadle, so check the postcode before you book.
Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite, in the M13 postcode south of the city centre, published one of the lowest hospital-group guide prices we found: £400 for one part, £538 for two and £658 for three, on 5 October 2026. It needs a referral. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Manchester Hospital, and Circle Health Group lists The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle and The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale. Those did not publish an MRI price we could verify.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Manchester area: Salford, Denton (south-east Manchester), Rochdale. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a hip scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £400; £538 two parts; £658 three parts and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private hip MRI in Manchester without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for hip scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Manchester. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. For typical age-related hip arthritis, an X-ray is often the first test and NICE guidance says the condition can often be diagnosed without imaging, so ask whether an MRI is the right test. See self-referral.
For hip and groin pain in Greater Manchester, a plain hip MRI is widely available, but a specialist may ask for an MR arthrogram, which is usually done at a hospital site. If you want both hips, ask whether the centre images the pelvis as one area; the Manchester Diagnostic Suite listed £538 for two parts on 5 October 2026.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Manchester?
Manchester's main NHS hospitals include Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe Hospital, run by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Salford Royal, run by the Northern Care Alliance. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure. Waits vary by trust; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each one.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Manchester?
The Metrolink tram network reaches Salford Quays, the city centre and many outer boroughs, which helps if a centre is near a stop. Several dedicated sites are close to the M60 ring road, which makes them easy to reach by car from most of Greater Manchester. City-centre and hospital sites often have paid parking. If you live north of the city, Rochdale may be closer than central Manchester; if you live south or east, Denton or Cheadle may be easier.
Can I have a hip MRI in Manchester if I have a hip replacement?
A metal hip replacement distorts the images close to it, and the centre must check the implant first. Some centres use special sequences to reduce the distortion; others will suggest a different test. If you need the other hip or the lower back scanned, a replacement usually does not stop that. Bring the implant details, or the hospital and date of the operation, when you book.
Will a Manchester centre scan one hip or both?
Ask. Some centres image the whole pelvis, which shows both hips, and price it as one area; others scan one hip at a time. If your pain is in the groin, the buttock or the outside of the hip, say so when you book so the radiographer covers the right area. A metal hip replacement affects both the safety check and the images; tell the centre about it first.
Is groin pain a reason for a hip MRI in Manchester?
Sometimes. Groin pain can come from the hip joint, the labrum, the tendons around the groin, a hernia or the lower back. A physio or GP examination narrows that down and decides whether an MRI of the hip, an ultrasound of the groin or a lower back scan is the right test. In younger, active people, an MRI or MR arthrogram is often used to look for a labral tear or impingement. Tell the Manchester centre exactly where the pain is, so the scan covers the right area.
