What we can and cannot do in Liverpool

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a hip MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Liverpool prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Liverpool, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private hip MRI in Liverpool

  1. Body area: hip, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Liverpool centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private hip MRI in Liverpool?

Liverpool has a dedicated scanning centre in the city centre, private hospitals in and around the city, and more options across Merseyside and the Wirral. Because the Mersey divides the region, people on the Wirral may find a site on their side of the river more practical than one in the city.

Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Liverpool Hospital and Spire Murrayfield Hospital on the Wirral; Spire did not publish an MRI price for them that we could verify on 5 October 2026. Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode, in the city centre, which charges its national prices.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Liverpool area: Liverpool city centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a hip scan on the day you want.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Liverpool without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for hip scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Liverpool. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. For typical age-related hip arthritis, an X-ray is often the first test and NICE guidance says the condition can often be diagnosed without imaging, so ask whether an MRI is the right test. See self-referral.

For a hip in Liverpool, ask whether the centre images one hip or the whole pelvis, and how that is priced. If you have a hip replacement, bring the details. People in Sefton and north Liverpool may find a site near Aintree easier than the city centre.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Liverpool?

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital. The Walton Centre in Fazakerley is a specialist NHS neurology and neurosurgery trust. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Liverpool?

A city-centre scanning site is well served by Merseyrail and buses, which helps if you do not drive. City-centre parking is mostly in paid car parks. Crossing the Mersey by tunnel carries a toll, which is worth remembering if you live on the Wirral. If you live in north Liverpool or Sefton, check whether a site nearer Aintree is easier than the city centre.

Is groin pain a reason for a hip MRI in Liverpool?

Sometimes. Groin pain can come from the hip joint, the labrum, the tendons around the groin, a hernia or the lower back. A physio or GP examination narrows that down and decides whether an MRI of the hip, an ultrasound of the groin or a lower back scan is the right test. In younger, active people, an MRI or MR arthrogram is often used to look for a labral tear or impingement. Tell the Liverpool centre exactly where the pain is, so the scan covers the right area.

Can I have a hip MRI in Liverpool if I have a hip replacement?

A metal hip replacement distorts the images close to it, and the centre must check the implant first. Some centres use special sequences to reduce the distortion; others will suggest a different test. If you need the other hip or the lower back scanned, a replacement usually does not stop that. Bring the implant details, or the hospital and date of the operation, when you book.

Will a Liverpool centre scan one hip or both?

Ask. Some centres image the whole pelvis, which shows both hips, and price it as one area; others scan one hip at a time. If your pain is in the groin, the buttock or the outside of the hip, say so when you book so the radiographer covers the right area. A metal hip replacement affects both the safety check and the images; tell the centre about it first.

Is there a private MRI centre in Liverpool city centre?

Yes. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode.

Should I use a centre on the Wirral or in Liverpool?

Can I book a private hip MRI in Liverpool without a GP?

Does a hip MRI scan both sides?

Sometimes. Some centres image the pelvis, which includes both hips; others scan one. Ask how the centre defines and prices the area.
