What we can and cannot do in Bristol

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a hip MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Bristol prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Bristol, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private hip MRI in Bristol

  1. Body area: hip, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Bristol centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private hip MRI in Bristol?

Bristol has a private hospital in Clifton, a dedicated diagnostic centre to the north of the city, and further options across the West of England. Vista Health also listed a community diagnostic centre in Weston-super-Mare on 5 October 2026, which may suit people south-west of the city.

Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, at Clifton Hill (BS8), published a one-part guide price of £525 on 5 October 2026, and said it can only give a guide price until your referral has been reviewed. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Bristol Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health's North Bristol Diagnostic Centre, in the BS34 postcode near Filton and Stoke Gifford, charges its national prices.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Bristol area: North Bristol Diagnostic Centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a hip scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £525 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Bristol without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for hip scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Bristol. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. For typical age-related hip arthritis, an X-ray is often the first test and NICE guidance says the condition can often be diagnosed without imaging, so ask whether an MRI is the right test. See self-referral.

For a hip in Bristol, Southmead Hospital is the area's main NHS orthopaedic centre. If you are on its list, ask whether a private hip scan would be used. Otherwise, the north Bristol dedicated site is near the M4/M5 for people coming from South Gloucestershire.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Bristol?

Bristol's main NHS hospitals include Southmead Hospital, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, run by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each trust's own figure.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Bristol?

Bristol has a Clean Air Zone in the city centre that charges older, more polluting vehicles, including some private cars. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it, but Clifton and city-centre sites are close to it, so check your vehicle before you drive. North Bristol sites are near the M4/M5 junction, which suits people coming from South Gloucestershire. Clifton parking is limited; buses and taxis may be easier.

Will a Bristol centre scan one hip or both?

Ask. Some centres image the whole pelvis, which shows both hips, and price it as one area; others scan one hip at a time. If your pain is in the groin, the buttock or the outside of the hip, say so when you book so the radiographer covers the right area. A metal hip replacement affects both the safety check and the images; tell the centre about it first.

Is groin pain a reason for a hip MRI in Bristol?

Sometimes. Groin pain can come from the hip joint, the labrum, the tendons around the groin, a hernia or the lower back. A physio or GP examination narrows that down and decides whether an MRI of the hip, an ultrasound of the groin or a lower back scan is the right test. In younger, active people, an MRI or MR arthrogram is often used to look for a labral tear or impingement. Tell the Bristol centre exactly where the pain is, so the scan covers the right area.

Can I have a hip MRI in Bristol if I have a hip replacement?

A metal hip replacement distorts the images close to it, and the centre must check the implant first. Some centres use special sequences to reduce the distortion; others will suggest a different test. If you need the other hip or the lower back scanned, a replacement usually does not stop that. Bring the implant details, or the hospital and date of the operation, when you book.

Does Bristol's Clean Air Zone affect getting to a scan?

It can if you drive an older, non-compliant vehicle into the centre. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside the zone. Check before you drive.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Bristol without a GP?

Yes, where a centre takes adult self-referral for hips. Most hospital groups near Bristol want a referral letter first.

Does a hip MRI scan both sides?

Sometimes. Some centres image the pelvis, which includes both hips; others scan one. Ask how the centre defines and prices the area.
