What we can and cannot do in Birmingham

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a hip MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Birmingham prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Birmingham, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private hip MRI in Birmingham

  1. Body area: hip, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Birmingham centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private hip MRI in Birmingham?

Birmingham and the wider West Midlands have a mix of dedicated scanning centres, several private hospitals and NHS community diagnostic sites where independent providers run scanners. Several dedicated scanning sites sit outside the city centre, in places such as Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall, which can suit people who would rather not drive into the centre.

Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Little Aston Hospital, near Sutton Coldfield, and Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull. Circle Health Group lists The Priory Hospital in Edgbaston. None of those published a Birmingham MRI price we could verify on 5 October 2026, so they are not in the table. Birmingham is also one of the few places with an upright MRI scanner listed at a published price.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Birmingham area: Birmingham, South Birmingham Diagnostic Centre, North Solihull Diagnostic Centre, Sandwell, Walsall. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a hip scan on the day you want.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Birmingham without a GP?

Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for hip scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Birmingham. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. For typical age-related hip arthritis, an X-ray is often the first test and NICE guidance says the condition can often be diagnosed without imaging, so ask whether an MRI is the right test. See self-referral.

Hip scans in Birmingham are widely available at the dedicated sites in Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall, and they are usually feet first. If you have a metal hip replacement done at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital or elsewhere, have the implant details ready when you book, as the centre must check them.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Birmingham?

The main NHS hospitals in the city include the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands and Good Hope, run by University Hospitals Birmingham, and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield. Midland Metropolitan University Hospital serves Sandwell and west Birmingham. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Birmingham?

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the area inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, and older vehicles that do not meet its standards are charged. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it. The Midland Metro tram and local rail lines reach some sites; many others are easier by car, with on-site parking. Check whether a site is at a hospital, where parking can be tight and paid, or on a business park. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield residents may find a site on their side of the city more practical than one in the centre.

Is groin pain a reason for a hip MRI in Birmingham?

Sometimes. Groin pain can come from the hip joint, the labrum, the tendons around the groin, a hernia or the lower back. A physio or GP examination narrows that down and decides whether an MRI of the hip, an ultrasound of the groin or a lower back scan is the right test. In younger, active people, an MRI or MR arthrogram is often used to look for a labral tear or impingement. Tell the Birmingham centre exactly where the pain is, so the scan covers the right area.

Can I have a hip MRI in Birmingham if I have a hip replacement?

A metal hip replacement distorts the images close to it, and the centre must check the implant first. Some centres use special sequences to reduce the distortion; others will suggest a different test. If you need the other hip or the lower back scanned, a replacement usually does not stop that. Bring the implant details, or the hospital and date of the operation, when you book.

Will a Birmingham centre scan one hip or both?

Ask. Some centres image the whole pelvis, which shows both hips, and price it as one area; others scan one hip at a time. If your pain is in the groin, the buttock or the outside of the hip, say so when you book so the radiographer covers the right area. A metal hip replacement affects both the safety check and the images; tell the centre about it first.

Can I book a private hip MRI in Birmingham without a GP?
