What we can and cannot do in Newcastle
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a cervical spine MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Newcastle prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Newcastle, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private cervical spine MRI in Newcastle?
Newcastle and Tyneside have a private hospital in Jesmond, dedicated scanning sites in Gateshead and North Tyneside, and further options across the North East. Many people here cross the Tyne for a scan, so search by postcode and travel time, not by city name.
Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital, in the NE2 postcode, published a one-part guide price of £590 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results sent to your referrer within a week. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Washington Hospital, south-east of Gateshead; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify. Vista Health listed sites in Gateshead (NE11) and North Tyneside (NE29), plus Hexham and Wansbeck further out.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Newcastle area: Gateshead, North Tyneside, Hexham, Wansbeck. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a cervical spine scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £590 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private cervical spine MRI in Newcastle without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for spine scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Newcastle. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. If you have new weakness in your arms or legs, clumsy hands, trouble walking, or new bladder or bowel problems, get urgent help through NHS 111, your GP or A&E rather than waiting for a private slot. See self-referral.
For a neck spine scan on Tyneside, tell the centre if you are anxious about your head going in. Arm weakness, clumsy hands or trouble walking need urgent NHS assessment rather than a private booking.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Newcastle?
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Newcastle?
The Tyne and Wear Metro links Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Sunderland, which helps if a site is near a station. Newcastle and Gateshead's Clean Air Zone charges some commercial vehicles but not private cars. The Gateshead site's NE11 postcode covers the Team Valley area, which is easiest by car from the A1. North Tyneside suits people near the coast.
If you live in Sunderland or County Durham, a Gateshead site south of the river may be quicker than going into Newcastle. People in rural Northumberland face long journeys either way, so ask about early or late appointments and plan how you will get home if you are given a sedative for claustrophobia.
Will a Newcastle neck scan explain tingling in my arm?
It may show a disc or bony narrowing pressing on a nerve root at the level that matches your arm symptoms, or narrowing around the spinal cord. Disc changes in the neck are very common in adults and are often not the cause, so the report needs reading with your examination. Tingling in both hands, clumsiness or trouble walking needs prompt medical assessment, not a wait for a private slot.
Do I need a neck MRI in Newcastle after whiplash?
Most whiplash injuries are soft tissue strains that improve over weeks, and imaging is not usually needed. A scan becomes more useful if there are nerve symptoms in the arms, weakness, or pain that has not improved after a period of treatment. If the injury was recent and you have severe pain, numbness or weakness, get assessed at A&E or a minor injuries unit first.
Is a neck spine scan hard if I am claustrophobic?
It can be, because your head and neck go into the middle of the scanner. Tell the Newcastle centre when you book. Ask whether it has a wider-bore scanner, a mirror, music, or a radiographer who will talk you through each stage. Open and upright scanners exist but are rarer and usually give less detailed images. Many anxious people manage a standard scan with planning.
