What we can and cannot do in Liverpool
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a cervical spine MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Liverpool prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Liverpool, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.
Four steps to a private cervical spine MRI in Liverpool
- Body area: cervical spine, one side unless you say otherwise.
- Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Liverpool centre.
- Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
- Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.
Where can I get a private cervical spine MRI in Liverpool?
Liverpool has a dedicated scanning centre in the city centre, private hospitals in and around the city, and more options across Merseyside and the Wirral. Because the Mersey divides the region, people on the Wirral may find a site on their side of the river more practical than one in the city.
Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Liverpool Hospital and Spire Murrayfield Hospital on the Wirral; Spire did not publish an MRI price for them that we could verify on 5 October 2026. Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode, in the city centre, which charges its national prices.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Liverpool area: Liverpool city centre. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a cervical spine scan on the day you want.
Can I book a private cervical spine MRI in Liverpool without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for spine scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Liverpool. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. If you have new weakness in your arms or legs, clumsy hands, trouble walking, or new bladder or bowel problems, get urgent help through NHS 111, your GP or A&E rather than waiting for a private slot. See self-referral.
For a neck spine scan in Liverpool, your head goes inside the scanner. The Walton Centre treats complex neck problems on the NHS; new arm weakness, clumsy hands or trouble walking need urgent assessment there or at A&E, not a private wait.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Liverpool?
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital. The Walton Centre in Fazakerley is a specialist NHS neurology and neurosurgery trust. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Liverpool?
A city-centre scanning site is well served by Merseyrail and buses, which helps if you do not drive. City-centre parking is mostly in paid car parks. Crossing the Mersey by tunnel carries a toll, which is worth remembering if you live on the Wirral. If you live in north Liverpool or Sefton, check whether a site nearer Aintree is easier than the city centre.
Will a Liverpool neck scan explain tingling in my arm?
It may show a disc or bony narrowing pressing on a nerve root at the level that matches your arm symptoms, or narrowing around the spinal cord. Disc changes in the neck are very common in adults and are often not the cause, so the report needs reading with your examination. Tingling in both hands, clumsiness or trouble walking needs prompt medical assessment, not a wait for a private slot.
Do I need a neck MRI in Liverpool after whiplash?
Most whiplash injuries are soft tissue strains that improve over weeks, and imaging is not usually needed. A scan becomes more useful if there are nerve symptoms in the arms, weakness, or pain that has not improved after a period of treatment. If the injury was recent and you have severe pain, numbness or weakness, get assessed at A&E or a minor injuries unit first.
Is a neck spine scan hard if I am claustrophobic?
It can be, because your head and neck go into the middle of the scanner. Tell the Liverpool centre when you book. Ask whether it has a wider-bore scanner, a mirror, music, or a radiographer who will talk you through each stage. Open and upright scanners exist but are rarer and usually give less detailed images. Many anxious people manage a standard scan with planning.

Is there a private MRI centre in Liverpool city centre?
Yes. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health's location list included a Liverpool diagnostic centre in the L1 postcode.
Should I use a centre on the Wirral or in Liverpool?
Choose by travel. The Mersey tunnels carry a toll, so people on the Wirral may find a site on their side of the river easier.
Can I book a private neck spine MRI in Liverpool without a GP?
At centres that take adult self-referral for spine scans, yes. Hospital sites near Liverpool usually want a referral letter.
Is a cervical spine MRI the same as a neck MRI?
No. A cervical spine MRI looks at the bones, discs, cord and nerves. A soft tissue neck MRI looks at glands, lumps and the throat.
