What we can and cannot do in Cambridge
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a cervical spine MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Cambridge prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Cambridge, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private cervical spine MRI in Cambridge?
Cambridge has a private hospital south of the city centre, a dedicated scanning site to the west, and further options across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. Vista Health also listed Peterborough and Bury St Edmunds on 5 October 2026, which may suit people further out.
Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, in the CB2 postcode, published the highest one-part guide price of the Nuffield sites we checked: £620 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Vista Health's Cambridge site, in the CB23 postcode west of the city, charges its national prices. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Cambridge area: Cambridge. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a cervical spine scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £620 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private cervical spine MRI in Cambridge without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for spine scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Cambridge. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. If you have new weakness in your arms or legs, clumsy hands, trouble walking, or new bladder or bowel problems, get urgent help through NHS 111, your GP or A&E rather than waiting for a private slot. See self-referral.
For a neck spine scan in Cambridge, mention claustrophobia when you book. Arm weakness or trouble walking needs urgent assessment, with Addenbrooke's the regional neurosciences centre.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Cambridge?
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Addenbrooke's Hospital, and Royal Papworth Hospital, the specialist heart and lung hospital, is on the same Cambridge Biomedical Campus. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Cambridge?
Cambridge city centre has very limited parking. The Park and Ride sites and the guided busway help for central and southern sites. A site to the west of the city, in the CB23 area, is usually easier by car from the A428 and the villages to the west than a central site. If you live in Ely, Newmarket or Royston, compare travel times rather than assuming Cambridge is closest.
Cambridge's centre has little parking and busy roads at peak times, so a site on the edge of the city is often easier by car. If you live in Ely, Huntingdon, Newmarket or Royston, compare the drive to each option, and ask whether you can be seen at a quieter time of day.
Is a neck spine scan hard if I am claustrophobic?
It can be, because your head and neck go into the middle of the scanner. Tell the Cambridge centre when you book. Ask whether it has a wider-bore scanner, a mirror, music, or a radiographer who will talk you through each stage. Open and upright scanners exist but are rarer and usually give less detailed images. Many anxious people manage a standard scan with planning.
Will a Cambridge neck scan explain tingling in my arm?
It may show a disc or bony narrowing pressing on a nerve root at the level that matches your arm symptoms, or narrowing around the spinal cord. Disc changes in the neck are very common in adults and are often not the cause, so the report needs reading with your examination. Tingling in both hands, clumsiness or trouble walking needs prompt medical assessment, not a wait for a private slot.
Do I need a neck MRI in Cambridge after whiplash?
Most whiplash injuries are soft tissue strains that improve over weeks, and imaging is not usually needed. A scan becomes more useful if there are nerve symptoms in the arms, weakness, or pain that has not improved after a period of treatment. If the injury was recent and you have severe pain, numbness or weakness, get assessed at A&E or a minor injuries unit first.

On 5 October 2026, Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital listed £620 for one part with a referral, while dedicated centres charging national prices started from £249.
Is parking a problem for MRI scans in Cambridge?
The city centre has very little parking. Use Park and Ride for central sites, or choose a site outside the centre if you drive.
Can I book a private neck spine MRI in Cambridge without a GP?
At centres that take adult self-referral for spine scans, yes. Hospital sites near Cambridge usually want a referral letter.
Is a cervical spine MRI the same as a neck MRI?
No. A cervical spine MRI looks at the bones, discs, cord and nerves. A soft tissue neck MRI looks at glands, lumps and the throat.
