What we can and cannot do in Birmingham
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a cervical spine MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Birmingham prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Birmingham, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.
Four steps to a private cervical spine MRI in Birmingham
- Body area: cervical spine, one side unless you say otherwise.
- Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Birmingham centre.
- Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
- Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.
Where can I get a private cervical spine MRI in Birmingham?
Birmingham and the wider West Midlands have a mix of dedicated scanning centres, several private hospitals and NHS community diagnostic sites where independent providers run scanners. Several dedicated scanning sites sit outside the city centre, in places such as Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall, which can suit people who would rather not drive into the centre.
Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Little Aston Hospital, near Sutton Coldfield, and Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull. Circle Health Group lists The Priory Hospital in Edgbaston. None of those published a Birmingham MRI price we could verify on 5 October 2026, so they are not in the table. Birmingham is also one of the few places with an upright MRI scanner listed at a published price.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Birmingham area: Birmingham, South Birmingham Diagnostic Centre, North Solihull Diagnostic Centre, Sandwell, Walsall. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a cervical spine scan on the day you want.
Can I book a private cervical spine MRI in Birmingham without a GP?
Yes, at centres that accept self-referral. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for spine scans after a questionnaire, at the same price at its sites near Birmingham. Hospital groups usually ask for a referral from a GP, consultant or registered physiotherapist. If you have new weakness in your arms or legs, clumsy hands, trouble walking, or new bladder or bowel problems, get urgent help through NHS 111, your GP or A&E rather than waiting for a private slot. See self-referral.
For a neck spine scan in Birmingham, the upright scanner is also an option if lying in a tunnel is impossible for you, though images can be less detailed. Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham's neurosciences service handles the most complex neck problems; arm weakness or clumsy hands need urgent NHS assessment, not a private wait.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Birmingham?
The main NHS hospitals in the city include the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands and Good Hope, run by University Hospitals Birmingham, and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield. Midland Metropolitan University Hospital serves Sandwell and west Birmingham. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Birmingham?
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the area inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, and older vehicles that do not meet its standards are charged. Most dedicated scanning sites are outside it. The Midland Metro tram and local rail lines reach some sites; many others are easier by car, with on-site parking. Check whether a site is at a hospital, where parking can be tight and paid, or on a business park. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield residents may find a site on their side of the city more practical than one in the centre.
Will a Birmingham neck scan explain tingling in my arm?
It may show a disc or bony narrowing pressing on a nerve root at the level that matches your arm symptoms, or narrowing around the spinal cord. Disc changes in the neck are very common in adults and are often not the cause, so the report needs reading with your examination. Tingling in both hands, clumsiness or trouble walking needs prompt medical assessment, not a wait for a private slot.
Do I need a neck MRI in Birmingham after whiplash?
Most whiplash injuries are soft tissue strains that improve over weeks, and imaging is not usually needed. A scan becomes more useful if there are nerve symptoms in the arms, weakness, or pain that has not improved after a period of treatment. If the injury was recent and you have severe pain, numbness or weakness, get assessed at A&E or a minor injuries unit first.
Is a neck spine scan hard if I am claustrophobic?
It can be, because your head and neck go into the middle of the scanner. Tell the Birmingham centre when you book. Ask whether it has a wider-bore scanner, a mirror, music, or a radiographer who will talk you through each stage. Open and upright scanners exist but are rarer and usually give less detailed images. Many anxious people manage a standard scan with planning.

Is there an upright MRI scanner in Birmingham?
Yes. On 5 October 2026, Vista Health listed upright MRI in Birmingham from £575 for one body part.
Do I have to drive into Birmingham city centre for a private MRI?
Often not. Several dedicated scanning sites are outside the centre, including in Kings Heath, Chelmsley Wood, West Bromwich and Walsall.
Can I book a private neck spine MRI in Birmingham without a GP?
At centres that take adult self-referral for spine scans, yes. Hospital sites near Birmingham usually want a referral letter.
Is a cervical spine MRI the same as a neck MRI?
No. A cervical spine MRI looks at the bones, discs, cord and nerves. A soft tissue neck MRI looks at glands, lumps and the throat.
