What we can and cannot do in Manchester

We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a brain MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Manchester prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Manchester, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Four steps to a private brain MRI in Manchester

  1. Body area: brain, one side unless you say otherwise.
  2. Referral rule: self-referral or a letter, depending on the Manchester centre.
  3. Centre type: dedicated, hospital group or open, compared on price, rule and report time.
  4. Ask one centre to contact you with the form. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price.

Where can I get a private brain MRI in Manchester?

Greater Manchester has dedicated scanning centres across several boroughs, private hospitals in and around the city, and a hospital-group diagnostic suite with published guide prices. Because Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs, a "Manchester" scan might be in Salford, Denton, Rochdale or Cheadle, so check the postcode before you book.

Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite, in the M13 postcode south of the city centre, published one of the lowest hospital-group guide prices we found: £400 for one part, £538 for two and £658 for three, on 5 October 2026. It needs a referral. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Manchester Hospital, and Circle Health Group lists The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle and The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale. Those did not publish an MRI price we could verify.

Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Manchester area: Salford, Denton (south-east Manchester), Rochdale. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a brain scan on the day you want.

Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £400; £538 two parts; £658 three parts and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.

Can I book a private brain MRI in Manchester without a GP?

Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for head scans after a questionnaire reviewed by its clinicians, at the same price at its sites near Manchester. Many centres are more cautious with head scans than joint scans. Hospital groups usually want a referral from a GP or consultant. NICE advises against brain imaging solely for reassurance in typical migraine or tension-type headache. For a sudden severe headache, weakness, slurred speech, confusion or a first seizure, call 999. See self-referral and GP letter.

For a head scan in Greater Manchester, Salford Royal hosts the area's main NHS neurosciences centre. Privately, Nuffield Health's Manchester Diagnostic Suite listed £400 for one part with a referral on 5 October 2026, the lowest one-part hospital-group price we found. Ask whether that covers a brain scan with contrast.

Salford Royal is the main NHS neurosciences centre for Greater Manchester. If a neurologist is already involved in your care, ask whether a private scan to a standard protocol would help them.

How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Manchester?

Manchester's main NHS hospitals include Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe Hospital, run by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Salford Royal, run by the Northern Care Alliance. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure. Waits vary by trust; NHS England's monthly provider data shows each one.

How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Manchester?

The Metrolink tram network reaches Salford Quays, the city centre and many outer boroughs, which helps if a centre is near a stop. Several dedicated sites are close to the M60 ring road, which makes them easy to reach by car from most of Greater Manchester. City-centre and hospital sites often have paid parking. If you live north of the city, Rochdale may be closer than central Manchester; if you live south or east, Denton or Cheadle may be easier.

Can I have a brain MRI in Manchester with a pacemaker or implant?

Possibly, but it needs planning. Some pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, nerve stimulators and older aneurysm clips are not MRI-safe; others are MRI-conditional and can be scanned only under set conditions, often in a hospital with cardiac staff on hand. Give the Manchester centre the make and model when you book. Do not assume a dedicated centre can scan you; many cannot.

Who will explain a private brain MRI report in Manchester?

Decide before you book. A consultant radiologist writes the report, but phrases such as "non-specific white matter foci" are common and often harmless, and you need a doctor to say what they mean for you. Options include your NHS GP, a private GP, or a private neurologist in Manchester, which is an extra cost. Ask the centre whether it sends the report to your GP.

Should I self-refer for a brain MRI in Manchester for memory problems?

Think carefully first. Memory problems have many causes, including low mood, poor sleep, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiency and medication side effects, and many of those are found with a GP assessment and blood tests, not a scan. If a GP or memory service thinks a scan would help, they will usually ask for one as part of an assessment. A private scan without that assessment can show age-related changes that are hard to interpret on their own.

Is a Manchester MRI centre always in Manchester itself?

Not always. Greater Manchester sites may be in Salford, Denton, Rochdale or Cheadle. Check the postcode before you book.

Can I book a private brain MRI in Manchester without a GP?

Will a brain MRI explain my headaches?

Usually not. NICE advises against brain imaging solely for reassurance in typical migraine or tension-type headache.
