What we can and cannot do in Cambridge
We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not scan, diagnose, refer or book a slot, and we cannot tell you whether you need a brain MRI. Urgent symptoms such as new weakness, numbness around the genitals or back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, a sudden severe headache or chest pain need 999, NHS 111 or your GP today. What we can do: show the Cambridge prices and rules we checked, and pass your request to one partner centre covering Cambridge, if one does. Free for you; the centre may pay us.

Where can I get a private brain MRI in Cambridge?
Cambridge has a private hospital south of the city centre, a dedicated scanning site to the west, and further options across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. Vista Health also listed Peterborough and Bury St Edmunds on 5 October 2026, which may suit people further out.
Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, in the CB2 postcode, published the highest one-part guide price of the Nuffield sites we checked: £620 on 5 October 2026, with a referral needed and results to your referrer within a week. Vista Health's Cambridge site, in the CB23 postcode west of the city, charges its national prices. Spire Healthcare's hospital list includes Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital; Spire did not publish an MRI price we could verify.
Vista Health's own location list, checked 5 October 2026, includes these sites for the Cambridge area: Cambridge. Its prices are national, so the table row applies to each of them; check that the site you pick offers a brain scan on the day you want.
Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital publishes a one-part MRI guide price of £620 and says you need a referral from a healthcare professional; it gives a firm price once that referral has been reviewed.
Can I book a private brain MRI in Cambridge without a GP?
Sometimes. Vista Health offers adult self-referral for head scans after a questionnaire reviewed by its clinicians, at the same price at its sites near Cambridge. Many centres are more cautious with head scans than joint scans. Hospital groups usually want a referral from a GP or consultant. NICE advises against brain imaging solely for reassurance in typical migraine or tension-type headache. For a sudden severe headache, weakness, slurred speech, confusion or a first seizure, call 999. See self-referral and GP letter.
For a head scan in Cambridge, Addenbrooke's hosts the regional NHS neurosciences centre. Privately, Nuffield Health Cambridge listed £620 for one part with a referral on 5 October 2026, the highest Nuffield price we found. Ask whether contrast is extra at both local options.
Addenbrooke's is the region's main NHS neurosciences centre. If a neurologist is already involved, ask whether a private head scan would help before you book one.
How long is the NHS wait for an MRI in Cambridge?
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Addenbrooke's Hospital, and Royal Papworth Hospital, the specialist heart and lung hospital, is on the same Cambridge Biomedical Campus. NHS England's diagnostics waiting times data for July 2026 (DM01, published 10 September 2026) show that 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI had already waited six weeks or more. That is the England figure; each trust's own figure is in NHS England's monthly provider data.
How do I get to a scanning centre in or near Cambridge?
Cambridge city centre has very limited parking. The Park and Ride sites and the guided busway help for central and southern sites. A site to the west of the city, in the CB23 area, is usually easier by car from the A428 and the villages to the west than a central site. If you live in Ely, Newmarket or Royston, compare travel times rather than assuming Cambridge is closest.
Cambridge's centre has little parking and busy roads at peak times, so a site on the edge of the city is often easier by car. If you live in Ely, Huntingdon, Newmarket or Royston, compare the drive to each option, and ask whether you can be seen at a quieter time of day.
Who will explain a private brain MRI report in Cambridge?
Decide before you book. A consultant radiologist writes the report, but phrases such as "non-specific white matter foci" are common and often harmless, and you need a doctor to say what they mean for you. Options include your NHS GP, a private GP, or a private neurologist in Cambridge, which is an extra cost. Ask the centre whether it sends the report to your GP.
Should I self-refer for a brain MRI in Cambridge for memory problems?
Think carefully first. Memory problems have many causes, including low mood, poor sleep, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiency and medication side effects, and many of those are found with a GP assessment and blood tests, not a scan. If a GP or memory service thinks a scan would help, they will usually ask for one as part of an assessment. A private scan without that assessment can show age-related changes that are hard to interpret on their own.
Can I have a brain MRI in Cambridge with a pacemaker or implant?
Possibly, but it needs planning. Some pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, nerve stimulators and older aneurysm clips are not MRI-safe; others are MRI-conditional and can be scanned only under set conditions, often in a hospital with cardiac staff on hand. Give the Cambridge centre the make and model when you book. Do not assume a dedicated centre can scan you; many cannot.
